After reflecting upon the Declaration of Independence, read, "So You're an American?" A Guide to Answering Difficult Questions Abroad. This reading will review values and ideals that are important to many, if not all, Americans. After reading the article, you will be asked to select one of the concepts or values that you believe are central to maintaining a good society and discuss how that concept or value is derived from or related to concepts in the Declaration of Independence.

The topic for this week's reflection assignment is the Declaration of Independence. Use "So you're an American?" to assist you in connecting values to the Declaration of Independence.

In writing your response, include specific examples and statements from the Declaration of Independence (citing it appropriately: Jefferson, 1776).

First, respond to the following prompt:

  • How do the values in the Declaration of Independence manifest in modern American society, or not? Explain.
  • Next, using the "So you're an American?" article, select one of the concepts or values mentioned that you believe is central to maintaining what you view to be a good society and discuss how that concept or value is derived from or related to concepts from the Declaration of Independence. In your opinion, are you able to trace the values and concepts listed in the article to a specific point in the Declaration of Independence?
