Christian Theology: Doctrine of the Trinity
Over the course of the first 4 centuries after the closing of the New Testament canon, the early church faced various challenges to the doctrine of the Trinity. This led to several church councils discussing this important topic to seek to describe the Godhead as much as is humanly possible. This is critical because it impacts our understanding of who Jesus is and what he accomplished on the cross. Thus, the person of Christ, which you will study in Christian Narrative II: Redemption, and the doctrine of the Trinity were the 2 main topics of those early church councils.
Begin by creating 2 lists. One will be what you know about the Trinity, and the other will be what you want to know about the Trinity. This should be done before you read.
Next, read Exploring Christian Theology, volume 1, part 2, chapters The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in Retrospect," Facts to Never Forget, Dangers to Avoid, and Principles to Put Into Practice, pages 168-220.
Read Kim, "The Doctrine of the Trinity Download The Doctrine of the Trinity," while viewing the following presentation.
St. Patrick's Bad Analogies
After reading and viewing, create 2 additional lists, this time enhanced by what you've learned. One will be what you learned, and the other will be what you still need to know about this topic. In the section regarding what you learned, explain 1 of the heresies mentioned and its implications on society's view of Christian doctrine.
In the end, you will have read the information and created these 4 separate lists:
- What I Know (pre-reading)
- What I Want to Know (pre-reading)
- What I Learned (post-reading)
- What I Still Need to Know (post-reading)
