Assignment:

Consider the following two scenarios and then answer the questions below:

Scenario 1

Scientists report that two hundred large objects have been detected entering our solar system. Analysis reveals that these objects are slowing down daily, leading scientists to conclude that the things are intelligently piloted. Additionally, mathematical projections demonstrate conclusively that these objects will arrive on Earth in the next few days. Finally, satellite telemetry indicates that these objects are approaching the EEarth with open weapon ports.

Scenario 2

Scientists report that two small objects have been detected entering our solar system. Analysis reveals that these objects are slowing down daily, leading scientists to conclude that the things are intelligently piloted. Additionally, mathematical projections demonstrate conclusively that these objects will arrive on Earth in the next few days. Finally, early indications from satellite telemetry are that these objects are approaching the EEarth without any discernable armaments.

Which model of the state of nature does each of these scenarios best conform to? Which scenario seems most likely to affect "Us negatively?" What are the implications of the us/them binaries in these scenarios? How do these scenarios differ from other "first contact" examples you may have seen or read about in science fiction? Finally, based on your understanding of these scenarios (and any other criteria you may want to discuss), as well as the material you have learned this week, how could "Us" and "Them" escape the "state of nature" represented by outer space? Asked another way, how could the "Us" and "Them" of either Scenario 1 or Scenario 2 establish a civil society?
