Question: The patient is a 27-year-old male who has a history of drug abuse. He was found unconscious after an unknown amount of time by his roommate. Emergency Medical Services gave him naloxone, and he became responsive. The patient complained of pain in his left forearm and left hip. Opiate overdoses can cause loss of consciousness, causing a person to slump over and compress their limbs with the weight of their torso (Jones et al., 2020). Intoxication can cause immobility for extended periods. The person does not wake up or reposition to relieve pressure on affected areas. Ischemia ensues, causing muscle tissue damage, inflammation, and swelling in osteofascial spaces that do not stretch (Rebielak & Lopez, 2020). Re-establishment of circulation, and reperfusion, can cause even more edema increasing pressures in these areas, resulting in compartment syndrome.
