Random Number Generators
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether a random number generator really produces a random sequence of observations. Using your graphing calculator or favorite statistical software:
a. Generate 100 observations from a standard normal distribution.
b. Classify each observation as either above or below the mean (and median) 0.
c. Conduct a runs test using the normal approximation to determine whether there is any evidence to suggest that the sequence of observations is not random with respect to the mean. Use a = 0.05.
Do this 100 times. How many times did you reject the null hypothesis H0: The sequence is random? Draw a conclusion about the sequence of observations produced by your random number generator.
In random samples of 25 from each of two normal populations, we found the following statistics: Estimate the difference between the two populations means with 95% confidence.

What is the estimated probability that a randomly sampled adult has a high income and is optimistic? Compute a .95 confidence interval for the true probability.
It has been observed that the number of particles emitted by a radioactive substance which reach a given portion of space during time t follows closely the Poisson distribution with parameter l. Calculate the probability that: i) No particles reach..

In a regression analysis involving 30 observations, the following estimated regression equation was obtained.
The average monthly electric bill of a random sample of 256 residents of a city is $90 with a standard deviation of $24.
The obvious caveat applies that such a (zero) correlation is ultimately an empirical question that depends on the data set. [1] Acemoglu, Daron, (1998) Why do New Technologies Complement Skills?
