"I don't understand," said Ralph. "What's the big deal about training? Maybe you and I are smarter than the kids coming to work today. However, I remember watching and listening, and following people who taught me everything I needed to know about my job." Ralph and Lorine were supervisors talking about the hotel's department staff meeting they had just attended. The department head had announced that all staff were to participate in two training programs: guest service and technology updates. "You're right about the past, Ralph," said Lorine. "However, you and I can cite lots of problems at our hotel. Will proper training reduce them? Do things need to change to remain competitive and to keep our good employees?" "It's easy to keep good employees; just pay them more," replied Ralph. "You and I are good employees, and we learned by watching. That's good enough today because it was good enough yesterday."

What are your reactions to Ralph's thoughts about training? How can effective training help the organization remain competitive and retain its best employees? What do you think of Ralph's comments about compensation and employee turnover?
