RAINN Case Study

Discussion 1

When you think of Non profit agencies you think of grant funding, donation base, and volunteers helping to support and drive the mission. With that, the help one can provide to the ones they serve are often times limited. Funding opportunities change often, guidelines change often which can create barriers and stop opportunities to serve individuals. When you think about private rather than public organizations money is involved. With a for profit organization the revenue is coming in from different sources on a greater scale and it is guaranteed. So with that more opportunities are provided to those being served. Well on the other hand when you have private organization sometimes those individuals are served on that large scale. Such as funds for housing opportunities, or funding to help with transportation, food, or other community services. I worked for a non profit organization that housed individuals who were trying to recover from addiction. Our program was designed for 45 days stay based on recovery works which was a grant funded program. Which allotted patients a certain amount of money for a life time for residential. Often times patients had already exhausted their life time bank as addiction and recovery is a life long long process. Individuals would sometimes get turned away or stay for a few days because of funding sources. 

I believe on a personal level if my life were different I would experience this organization as a safe haven for me and my needs. A place that would pour into me and help me navigate life and the changes that would come along with I was and my experiences. 

Discussion 2

In my experience working with non-profits, they are constantly writing grants for funding, or asking donors.  This pulls resources from care of a client, and makes their mental load twice as heavy.  So many great resources for a community or nationally are non-profits, and it is discouraging to see when their care is interrupted by lack of funding.  They provide valuable resources for those who are vulnerable and having services online and anonymous can be healing for survivors.  They do not have to worry about anyone seeing them in an office or feel fearful to leave the comfort of their home.  Additionally, it could be safer for people who are currently in an abusive situation and cannot leave their home or talk on the phone.  Private organizations risk losing funding or running out before a project or campaign is completed.  Public organizations receive steady funding, but are limited to government funding.  There is some flexibility with private organizations in which grants they apply for and where the funding goes specifically.  As a woman, I feel hopeful that these types of services exist because of past experiences of abuse.  Statistically, women are abused at a higher rate than men, though that could be because of a lack of reporting.  If I were a man, I might feel less strongly because it may not be needed for myself specifically, but could directly help someone close to me. 

Devotion Using the Gifts God Has Given Us

Discussion 1

I think I have been fortunate enough to be given gift by God that are also my strengths that I feel I use quite often and will be very applicable to my degree in social work. I have the ability to hear others and sympathize with them as well as problem solve issues they are facing. I feel I have been given the ability to do so because my calling is in social work. I think this is extremely applicable to my degree in social work because I will have the ability to help others work through things they are struggling with and give tools and insight to be able to do so. I think about the strengths God has given me and I feel grateful to be given something so specific that falls perfectly with things that I am passionate about, but do think this was all intentional. I believe this strength has a specific role in my life and it is going to be the greatest way I am able to efficiently serve others and work towards bettering the world and my community and have God work through me as an individual. I am extremely excited for my journey as a social worker because of this as I feel it's what I was put on Earth to do. I feel that my greatest strength is something I wasn't aware of up until the last couple of years, and now I feel I have finally figured out why I've been drawn to social work through the words of those around me.

Discussion 2

My gifts are patience, empathy, and being non-judgmental.  I can use these gifts to serve others by leading by example; I can show patience and kindness even when it is not reciprocated because I think that's when it's needed the most.  These will help in the field of social work as I will need to be able to show empathy and be non-judgmental with clients.  Showing them that I care and am able to empathize will help to build rapport.  My strengths are compassion and empathy.  I feel grateful that I was created with these gifts and strengths.  I believe my role is to help others in any way that I can
