Imagine a world where you don't need to stop at the check-out counter to buy a product or even a world where you can make anything you want in your own home, just by pressing "print". Radio-frequency identification (RFID) and 3D printers have arrived and they promise a fascinating future, depending on what we make.
Radio-frequency identification (RFID) uses electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and track tags attached to objects. The tags contain electronically stored information. RFID has been used for years for large products, but as the cost of RFID decreases, the potential to embed in all products is possible (RFID chips are so small they can be embedded in the plastic of a water bottle).
Additive manufacturing (AM) (also known as 3D printing) will change the process for creating a product. One futurist once stated, we will no longer "depend on the old system that require parts to be manufactured in mass quantities."
What impact will these new technologies--and other new technologies--have on how new products are created and marketed 10 years from now? Will there be a need for retail stores in the future?
