Purpose of the Assignment

This is a semester assignment and it has two parts. In the first part students need to do the scientific literature survey and in the second part, they are required to propose, design and simulate the RF subsystem. They are required to compare the results. Thus this assignment is engineered to provide a mix trend of research and industry.

Designing of a Radio Frequency (RF) Communication Subsystem Using MATLAB

Tasks Description

This assignment on RF communication subsystem design is a semester project and its objective is to encourage students to study the current scenarios in the modern telecommunication systems. They are required to design and simulate a radio frequency subsystem that can be applied to the communication system.

Theoretically wireless transceivers can be divided into baseband and RF sections. As baseband is the range of frequencies at which transmitters process the input and receivers generate the output. There are number of signal processing techniques used to improve the quality of the data and capacity of the transmission line for a specific data rate. However, the RF circuit in the transmitter is used for converting the processed signal up to the allocated channel and inserting it into the transmission medium. Similarly, the RF circuit in the receiver is utilized for receiving the signal from the transmission medium and converting it down back to baseband signal.

The candidates are required to carry following two tasks to complete this semester project:

Task 1. Each student is required to conduct research survey on the present RF subsystems and their applications in Telecommunications. The survey should also investigate the issues such as health and safety, security risks related to microwave and RF system in the telecom industry and research.

Task 2. Each candidate is required to propose and model the RF circuit. The design may also include along with the transmitter and receiver RF circuits it can include the attenuators, amplifiers, polarization controllers. The performance of the proposed RF circuit should be optimized and can be evaluated using standard performance metrics. These include bit-error rate test, signal to noise ratio, throughput and capacity.

Students should start designing the RF subsystem model in the MATLAB by exploring the RF Toolbox. RF Toolbox is very useful as it can be exploited for designing, modeling, analyzing, and visualizing networks of RF components.

Important points:

- Your implementation will be at the level of MATLAB RF Toolbox and Communications Block set (i.e. NO hardware design is required).
- As the project is related to design the RF subsystem, consider the signal processed baseband data.
- It is appreciated to describe the RF circuit by its mathematical model.
- You are not required to use data compress
