Group work: Reading the script (Choose a classmate to work with on this part).
Description: Radio is a wonderful medium to really focus on how to hook audiences into what you find interesting. As BBC Assistant Editor, Neil Churchman notes, a "radio cue" is the "shop window" that draws in the audience. Use the tips and strategies in our readings, activities, and class discussions to help you compose your radio minute.
General guidelines for writing your Radio Minute
The best radio minutes will include:
1. A clear and short radio cue or intro (~50 words) that immediate orients your reader to the what, and hopefully why of the story.
2. A "byline" that introduces you, the journalists.
3. A following segment that clearly denotes human interest even as it gives us evidence of well researched reporting, and leads us to the nut-graf of your story.
4. A closing segment that tells listeners where to go for the whole story.
5. Radio minutes should follow the basic conventions of journalistic writing (Proofread, have headlines, bylines etc.)
6. AND attend to writing that is "for the ear." I.e., be conversational!
