1) Use Stata to analyze the following data from a clinical trial designed to evaluate whether or not patients with coronary artery disease respond to different treatments. The treatments are called heparin and enoxaparin. Let

RD = pH - pE

RR = pH / pE

OR = pH/(1- pH) ÷ / pE / (1-pE)

where pH denotes the probability of not responding to heparin and pE denotes the probability of not responding to enoxaparin. Note that not responding is a bad thing in this situation.

Here are the data:

Treatment

Heparin Enoxaparin

Respond No 309 266

Yes 1255 1341

(a) Calculate point estimates and 95% CIs for RD, RR, and OR. (5 points)

(b) Interpret and summarize your findings. Which, if either, treatment is better? (5 points)

2) In this tutorialwe learn Stata procedures for obtaining point estimates and confidence intervals for the risk difference (RD), the risk ratio (RR),and the odds ratio (OR). These parameters are measures of association for comparing two proportions. The Stata commands that we will use are: csi tabulate

Use the data in the file smokingdata.xlsx.

Data from medical records at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota were collected on smoking status (smoker or nonsmoker) and whether or not one has experienced a heart attack. Analyze the data with the goal of evaluating the association between smoking and MI. Limit the answer you turn in to at most one side of one page. Your answer must contain Stata code and appropriately labeled Stata output (e.g., do not use the default output, instead change the labels provided by Stata to coincide with this setting). Identify and interpret specific results to lead you to a conclusion about the scientific question.
