SCENARIO

You are working in a megatonic laboratory as a trainee engineer and the job requires you to have a clear understanding of mechanical and electrical concepts. Your supervisor has told you that your knowledge needs to be strengthened and modified in the following areas: SI units, data analysis, static and dynamic forces, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics, material properties and failure, and circuit theories. The following tasks have been set by your supervisor

Task 1

Samples of metals, composites and polymer materials have been given to you. You are expected to perform experiments and present a standardized laboratory report on one of these materials. Your senior engineer has asked you to deliver an overview of scientific evidence to an audience using a suitable software package using both computational and qualitative methods.

The report should contain the following elements

• The SI units used to include prefix notation, symbols and derived units
• Graphical representation of the quantitively data gathered , using software
• Reflection on the application of the scientific methods for the testing
• Analysis of the graphical data presented
• Use the appropriate referencing system to mention the citation

Task 2

Your boss wants you to write a formal report on the potential for material failure and the structural properties of the metals, polymers and composites you have been researching under service conditions (Task 1.0).

In task 1.0, you should consider the impact of deterioration on the appearance of the materials provided and collect qualitative input from colleagues on the possible causes of failure. This feedback data, using appropriate graphical software, to be displayed.

The report should reflect on the application of the scientific method. There should also be an analysis of all the graphical data presented (qualitative and quantitative information from Task 1 and Task 2).

• A description of the structural properties linked to their respective material properties

• An explanation and comparison of the types of degradation including elastic, electrical and magnetic hysteresis

• Critical comparison of how the behavioral characteristics of mechanical systems can influence changes in the thermal efficiency of a heat transfer operation.

• Full citation/references using an acceptable referencing system.
