Your book is out of date, but it is really all the same thing. When I began my health care career 46-years ago, we focused on quality improvement. For some reason, quality improvement went out of vogue and the new term was Total quality improvement. Then Total quality improvement went out of vogue we focused on quality management which morphed into total quality management as addressed on page 378 of your text book. But time has moved on. Today health care organizations focus on a “Culture of Quality.” All the processes prior to Culture of Quality involved measuring and looking for and correcting problems. Culture of Quality still requires measuring and looking for and correcting problems, but our attitude should be to “do it right the first time” -- a culture where perfection is expected.
You may argue that perfection is impossible, but how many times per 1000 is it ok to drop a new born baby on the floor? Perfection is expected.
There is no wrong answer to this question. How would you create a Culture of Quality in your health care organization?
