Purpose of the assignment:  To consider the qualities needed for selling success (direct sales and non-selling sales), to reflect on how well you meet these qualities and to create a plan to develop the most important qualities.

Deliverable: You will write a self-assessment that:

1. assesses your qualities against those required in selling (direct sales and non-sales selling).
2. lays out a plan to develop the qualities you don't have (should be SMART).

Your self-assessment will be exceptionally written: excellent structure and excellent grammar & spelling.  In business, your audience uses your written work to judge your competence, professionalism and to determine if they want to pursue a working relationship with you.  Therefore, the expectation of good writing is particularly high in this class.  Recall the 5 C's and the concept of Audience Analysis from your Business Communication class to facilitate good writing.  Particular emphasis is be placed on being concise.  You should edit and re-edit your work to remove any repetition and tighten up your language and expression (no one likes to read something that is longer than it needs to be - especially in business!)

Your self-assessment will be the result of an in-depth analysis of yourself, the field you w ant to work in and the qualities that are need in that field.  Critical thinking, analysis and insight should be well demonstrated in your submission. Resist the temptation to describe a list of qualities without pursuing any meaningful analysis.

Consider the following ideas/thought-starters:

• What qualities do you already have?  How do you know you have these qualities?
• How do people perceive you?  (ask friends, relatives, co-workers)
• Does the feedback you get from Managers, Professors, etc align with your self-assessment?
• Identify and prioritize the qualities that must be improved.  Why did you pick what you picked?
• How will you improve these qualities?  What changes in your behaviour can you make in order to have the desired qualities.  For example, the behaviour associated with integrity is consistency in what you know, what you say and what you do.  Alternatively, how will you change your behaviour/actions to demonstrate the highly desirable quality of confidence?
