This assessment will assess the Learning outcomes:
CLO1 - Explain concepts and stages of value stream process.
CLO2 - Identify value stream process of business that can enhance value for business and customers.
CLO3 - Apply lean techniques to determine, flow, demand and levelling state of the value stream.
CLO4 - Analyze organization process and map for value stream process stages.
CLO5 - Evaluate and recommend value stream process modi?cation, maintenance and sustainability of processes.
Value Stream Management Group Report -
The Value Stream Management Project aims to engage students in learning activities and give them the opportunities to apply the knowledge gained on the course in a real-life environment. This would enable students achieve the learning outcomes. The project is designed to fulfil all learning outcomes on the course.
a) You are required identify a company and submit a detailed report followed by individual oral defence.
b) Assessment 3 (Project) is of 2 parts: A group report is 10% of the total course marks and individual presentation and individual oral defence (5 questions) 20% of the total course marks based on the group report.
c) All members of the group are equally responsible for the outcome of the project report and will get equal marks for the report which is not the case for the individual parts.
TASK INSTRUCTIONS - In this project you will discuss the Value stream management of a company you choose. Your discussion must be specific and refer to one production or service delivery process throughout most of the project. Read the instructions carefully. Do not just put generic theory; the discussion must be specific, you must apply the theory and use the tools we discuss in class. The practical examples must refer to your company's activity and must be explained in text.
ASSESSMENT TASKS -
1. INTRODUCTION
Background of the company and the industry in which the company operates and the strategy of the company.
a) Describe the industry in which the company operates with this product/service and identify all the customers (users, environment, society, indirect customers) along with their needs (you can use table to do this).
b) In this section, you provide a brief background of the company. Briefly describe the company's activity and its products/services.
c) Describe main problems of the company or potential area for improvement as well as how implementation of lean can contribute to solve those problems.
2. PRODUCTION PROCESS / SERVICE DELIVERY PROCESS
a) Choose product or service of the company to describe how it is produced. Support explanation with data on production (equipment used in each operation, facility layout (you can provide drawing or photo), productivity, lead time, production rate, scarp rate, defect rate, number of employees in production line....). Explain how production or service delivery process operates (is it pulled by customer requirement or planned in advance?)
b) Identify suppliers for each part or material used for production or service by explaining relations (partnership, one time supplier). Explain how inventory management works (does company use warehouses, where are those located, how often it orders material and parts...) You can support your explanation with data on inventory management (lead time, quantities, inventory system (FIFO, LIFO...) ....)
3. DEFINE THE THREE STAGES OF LEAN APPLICATION FOR THE PRODUCTION PROCESS/ SERVICE: DEMAND, FLOW AND LEVELING
a) Demand Stage: Identify customer ordering patterns. Calculate the takt time, define the pitch for our process/service. Talk about the buffer and safety inventories if any. Describe the finished goods supermarket.
b) Flow Stage: At this part you have to discuss the flow, line balancing, standardized work, quick changeover, autonomous maintenance, in-process supermarket, Kanban system, FIFO lanes and production scheduling for the chosen process/ service.
c) Leveling Stage: At this you have to discuss paced withdrawal, Heijunka and the runner.
d) After that Identify all 7 types of Wastes (Identify the Non-lean conditions) MUDA (waste) in the process of the company you explained in previous chapter. Identify MURI (overburden) and MURA (unevenness) by explaining each in company's context (which workers, equipment or activities are overburden and how, what activities are uneven with others...).
4. MAP THE CURRENT STATE FOR THE CHOSEN SERVICE/PRODUCTION PROCESS USING ANY VSM SOFTWARE AS VISIO.
a) First you have to collect and calculate the process attributes
b) Then you need to map material and information flow. Make sure to make the map clear and including all necessary steps in the chosen service/ production process.
c) Make sure to develop VSM diagram of current process flow by using symbols and process metrics which is relevant to stated problem.
d) Visualize the entire manufacturing material and information flow. Instead of a single, isolated operation.
- Visualize how operations currently communicate with production control and with each other.
- See problem areas and sources of waste.
- Locate bottlenecks and WIP.
- Spot potential safety and equipment concerns.
e) Create a soft copy of the VSM current map using any recommended software by your teacher better to use the VISIO from office since it is offered for free by the college. Ask your teacher or IT personnel at your campus for help.
5. DETERMINE LEAN METRICS
Basic metrics
a) Inventory turns.
b) Days of inventory on-hand.
c) Defective parts per million (DPPM) or sigma level.
d) Total value stream WIP.
e) Total cycle time, or total value adding time (VAT).
f) Total lead time.
g) Uptime.
h) On-time delivery.
i) Overall equipment effectiveness.
j) First-time-through capability.
k) Health and safety record (10 marks for all calculations)
Remember to stick only to the process you explained in previous chapter and not any other.
6. MAP THE FUTURE STATE FOR THE CHOSEN SERVICE/PRODUCTION PROCESS USING ANY VSM SOFTWARE AS VISIO.
At the beginning you need to work on the below stages:
a) Stage one: focus on demand, Stage two: focus on flow and Stage three: focus on levelling
b) Create a soft copy of the VSM future map using any recommended software by your teacher better to use the VISIO from office since it is offered for free by the college. Ask your teacher or IT personnel at your campus for help.
7. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Briefly explain what you wrote so far by describing methodology you have used and stress benefits for the company if it respects your suggestions in the project report.
