"After listening to Suheir Hammad, I understood that the purpose of her poem is to ask for peace. Suheir talks about the tragic incident that happened on 9/11/01 in New York, and how It affected herself and people who are Muslim. She expressed what she and her family have gone through being Muslim in America after 9/11. She wants the listeners to know that just because someone in her religion or ethnic background has done something extremely horrible, it doesn't mean everyone of that religion or ethnic background are bad people, including herself. It's not right how Muslim people were treated unfairly all because of the actions from the people involved in the attack. After the 9/11 incident, many people started to think that all Muslim people were bad and began to harass them. Every religion and ethnic background has good and bad people, and others shouldn't be judged from one person's actions. Suheir wants everyone to know and understand that not every Muslim person is a horrible human being and not everyone is the same, even if they have the same religion and ethnic background. "
