All nurses, whether clinicians or academics, need to be encouraged to write for publication to enable important work, ideas and innovations to be shared with others to influence their practice or expertise on their field. Nursing is a graduate profession in the UK with some nurses continuing to study for higher degrees; the skills in writing required for University assignments are often not dissimilar to submitting work for publication. However, ignoring the journals aim, scope and submission guidelines will result in a rejection. Attention to detail with the writing process, submission and any follow-up correspondence with the editor or reviewers is necessary to improve the chance of success. Nurses have information that needs to be shared with colleagues while also possessing writing skills that should only need a small amount of adaptation to write for publication. Now is the time for clinical nurses to start sharing their knowledge as an accepted part of their roles.
