Report - Design a Health Promotion Campaign

Learning Outcome 1: Analyse individual strategies for health promotion which aim to develop personal skills
Learning Outcome 2: Understand settings approaches to create supportive health environments
Learning Outcome 3: Analyse community strategies for health promotion
Learning Outcome 4: Apply advocacy strategies for public health issues

Instructions:

The report is a written document of 2000 words, which consists of a 1500- word report, and an advocacy document of up to 500 words.
The report must include a one- page ‘Executive summary' at the beginning of the document which provides a concise summary of the overall report.

As an appendix to the report, you must include either a media release or letter to a politician, which seeks to make a persuasive case for increased Government regulation in order to promote health.

Your report must outline a plan for a multi-part health promotion campaign to prevent type 2 diabetes. It must include a focus on creating health promoting environments or settings.

It should consist of:
• Executive Summary (300 words). This can include bullet points (no references required)
• Introduction (150 words)
• Background: Provide a brief overview of the health problem (150 words)
• Part 1: Description of health promotion activities to change individual behaviour among young people as part of the campaign, including the settings in which these health promotion activities occur. (400 words approximately)
• Part 2: Description of health promotion activities that work in partnership with specific communities (eg CALD, Indigenous, etc) to promote the health of young people, and the settings in which they occur. (400 words approximately)
• Part 3: Description of an advocacy strategy for your campaign, to push for a specific change in order to prevent type 2 diabetes among young people. This should link to your appendix document, and you should refer to this here. Describe how your appendix (media release or letter) is part of a wider advocacy strategy. (450 words approximately)
• Conclusion, which summarises the key aspects of your campaign. (150 words) Include at least 12-15 references to support your plan.
Instructions for Part 3: Advocacy document

The advocacy document is to be provided as an appendix to your report as it also related to preventing type 2 diabetes among you people. You can refer to the appendix in your report when you describe your advocacy strategy in part 3 of your report. In your report, you should describe how this document forms part of a wider advocacy strategy.

Diet is a significant factor in many of the common health problems in Australia: being obese or overweight is associated with the consumption of high fat foods and is a significant risk factor for Type 2 Diabetes. Your task for this part of the assessment is to produce an advocacy document to make the case for a change designed to prevent obesity in the long term. The change you propose is Government regulation to restrict the advertising of fast food to children. This is an area where public health advocates have argued that self - regulation by industry has failed, and Government regulation is needed ( see for example Hebden et al, 2011)

Prepare either a ‘Media Release' or a ‘Letter to a politician' on restricting advertising of fast food to children. This can be up to 500 words.
• The media release or letter must summarise your ‘key messages': clearly describe wh at change you would like to see. Justify why this is important (you should use referen ces here to establish the significance of the problem). Identify how it should come ab out.
• For a letter to a politician: Even though you are not sending the letter, you should address it to a real politician (use their name and genuine address details)

• Media release: please use the instructions and examples provided in the Public Health Advocacy Institute of WA [PHAIWA] toolkit (2013) as a guide, see pages 49- 53.
