Learning Outcome 3: Recognise health priorities in and across Australia and globally
Learning Outcome 4: Define the role of government in the administration and provision of public health services
Learning Outcome 5: Apply skills in academic writing, critical reasoning and analysis, and oral communication
Learning Outcome 6: Appraise up to date health information and research
Context
This assignment assesses the learning outcomes around students' knowledge and ability to analyse a public health issue taking key principles of public health into account. Students will examine one of the National Health Priority Areas from the perspective of public health, including the burden of disease (locally and globally), population level prevention strategies and interventions to address the public health issue that reflect on the role of government in the administration and provision of health services in reducing the burden of the disease. Students will demonstrate a key understanding of the sociocultural factors influencing health and development through a briefing paper providing evidence-based recommendations to reduce the burden of disease in a primary health setting. This assignment will enable the student to put evidence into practice and enhance their professional writing skills which they will require as a public health practitioner.
Instructions
The student will choose one of the 9 National Health Priority Areas (NHPA) in Australia as the context or setting to complete this assignment.
1. Cancer control (1996)
2. Cardiovascular health (1996)
3. Injury prevention and control (1996)
4. Mental health (1996)
5. Diabetes mellitus (1997)
6. Asthma (1999)
7. Arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions (2002)
8. Obesity (2008)
9. Dementia (2012)
Section 1: Introduction (100 words)
Describe the chosen critical national priority area using textbooks and evidence-based literature, in relation to causal factors, populations most at risk and key contributing factors to the health issue. Your introduction should include a statement about what the briefing paper will address (ie. what is the purpose of the brief).
Problem Description (400 words)
Students will also provide the global, national and regional prevalence of the issue and identify any trends in the incidence of the problem with a clear justification as to why it is a significant public health issue for the country. Mortality, morbidity, DALYS and groups most at risk may be described in relation to the chosen priority.
Section 2: Current evidence-based analysis of how the Social Determinants of Health affect the NHPA (350 words)
Students will review contemporary research evidence (not older than 10 years) eg. from peer reviewed journal articles and choose 2 Social Determinants of Health (SDH) to explore and analyse their impact on the NHPA. This analysis may also include other key principles of public health such as the ‘new public health', human rights-based approaches to health and ecological approaches. Students should analyse interventions and approaches designed to address the chosen health issue, and investigate the impacts and approaches through a critical and comparative analysis, considering limitations of the evidence under review.
Section 3: The role of the government (300 words)
Based on your review of the NHPA and its impacts globally and in Australia as well as the influence of the Social Determinants of Health, identify and explore the role of the different levels of government in the administration and provision of health services and reducing the burden of the disease in Australia. Explain possible gaps that you found through your analysis of the NHPA, the impact of the SDH and the approaches to the issue which may inform government practices in your chosen NHPA.
Section 4: Evidence-based recommendations and conclusions (350 words) Recommendations: 250 words
Based on your research, understanding of the problem and intervention approaches, consider confounding factors and potential barriers to implementation or effectiveness and recommend strategies for effective interventions with a rationale supported by your reviewed literature and other text.
Conclusion: 100 words
Conclude the assignment by restating the purpose of the briefing paper, issue and summary of recommendations for effective programmatic interventions or implications for further research.
