How did psychometric testing develop as a branch of psychology? The development of psychometric testing stemmed from Francis Galton's interest in studying the inheritance of human abilities and individual differences in the 19th century. Galton collected data on over 9,000 people in the Anthropometric Laboratory, where he observed the relationship between sensory acuity and intelligence. To analyze this vast amount of data, scatter plots was used to visualize correlations between variables. Later, Karl Pearson developed the mathematical formulation for the correlation coefficient and observed regression toward the mean. Alfred Binet developed the first intelligence test to identify children who require extra help in their schooling and development. Lewis Terman adapted Benet's intelligence test into the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, one of the most widely used IQ tests in the United States. However, The term intelligence quotient (IQ) was introduced by William Stern, who divided mental age by chronological age to yield this measurement.
