Homework: Marymount Elements Influencing the Believability of the Research Article Critique

Over the course of the semester and throughout each week you have engaged in journal club critique activities that focused on different sections of a research report. Now that we have explored all of these sections, it is time to engage in a critique of an entire quantitative article. You have the knowledge and skills, and it is time to begin working on developing your confidence and competency. As a new graduate nurse, you are expected to have competencies in the area of appraising literature for evidence-based practice.

Our course textbook (Chapter 18) provides a table listing detailed critique questions for consideration. It also provides some critique examples in the appendices.

For this homework we will use the questions proposed by Coughlan et al. (2007) to critique an article by Faith et al. (2021). Coughlan et al. (2007) provide an excellent list of appraisal questions, and though this list is not as extensive as our textbook's, it nevertheless allows consumers of research to conduct a step-by-step critique of a quantitative research article. Their approach focuses on elements influencing the believability and robustness of research. It is recommended that you read the Coughlan et al. (2007) article in full prior to beginning your critique.
