Assignment: Model and Control Design of a DC Motor

Abstract- (Minimum 250 words) A very brief introduction of your project

1. Provide the general information about the DC motor (so that someone unfamiliar with the DC motor could have a good idea of what it is);

2. State why it is important

3. State the tasks you plan to work on: such as modeling the DC motor, and a feedback controller design via root locus (Please note: the design will differ based on different system parameters and design requirements. You are not required to specify these details in till abstract)

2. System Description

2.1 System Model

Use a figure to show the system diagram.

2.1.1 System Assumptions

In this project, we are modeling the armature controlled DC motor. The rotor and shaft are assumed to be rigid. We assume a viscous friction model that the friction torque is proportional to shaft angular velocity.

2.1.2 System Inputs and Outputs

In this DC motor system model, the voltage source applied to the armature is the single input. and the angular velocity is the single output.

2.1.3 System Equations

2.1.3.1 Transfer Function

Find the transfer function that relates the angular velocity and the applied voltage.

2.1.3.2 State-space Model (optional)

2.2 System Parameters

Use a table to list all system parameters and their values. It is suggested to choose a set of values based on the datasheet of an actual DC motor.

3. Control Design

3.1 Design Requirements

Define the design criteria the system is going to meet, such as settling time, percent overshoot, steady-state error that needs to satisfy.

3.2 Feedback Control Design

3.2.1 Open-loop Response

See how the original open-loop system performs.

3.2.2 Controller Design

Depending on your design requirements, you may have different controller design, such as lag controller, proportional controller, PID controller, etc.

3.2.3 Closed-loop Response

Analyze the design results and see how the system performs with the controller.

4. Conclusion

Make a conclusion of the results and summarize the project.

5. Reference List your references.

6. Appendix

Any additional information such as matlab source code.
