Homework: Letter to Elected Official
For this homework, I want you to take in all that we have covered and learned about and share this with an elected official. With that, I want you to write a letter to a politician were you discuss issues facing your community or a marginalized group and provide some concrete recommendations for solving the problem. To complete this homework, you will need to select a social justice issue like Mass Incarceration, Immigration Reform, Gender Wage Gap, Housing Segregation, School Reform, etc...Then you will research this topic through finding a news and scholarly article that gives some context/background about your back ground. You will also select two course material sources (readings/lectures/documentaries) that give details about your topic. After your topic and materials have been selected, you will then draft a letter to the official the includes your background, the issues that you are concerned about, and potential solutions for dealing with the problem.
General format:
General Salutation:
Dear Congressperson (Insert Name)
You may select any elected official from local to federal office.
I. Paragraph I: You and your background. Provide some details about who you are as a student/person/constituent/voter.
II. Paragraph II: The issue. Discuss the issue that you are concerned about in detail. Provide specific information about your topic from your references; please cite your sources and include all 4 references (1 news article, 1 academic article, and 2 course references). Make sure you follow MLA or other academic standards for in-text citations.
You will need to include a bibliography for your outside sources (news and scholarly articles)
III. Paragraph III: Your solutions. Provide some reasonable solutions to the problem like more funding, anti-bias training, new programs, constructing new/affordable housing, etc.. Be reasonable and specific in your asks (ie. don't ask for racism to end or overthrow of the government.
IV. Paragraph IV: Say goodbye. Conclude by thanking the official for considering your perspectives and giving his/her time. Add anything else you want to mention here.
