Standardized assessments have become dramatic driving factors behind No Child Left Behind legislation according to Wright (2010). Assessments must support and enhance student learning to be effective tools of measurement. Teachers spend an entire year with students, talking to them, discussing material with them, have multiple measures of assessment throughout the school year, yet a disadvantage of standardized assessment would be giving student's an untimed assessment with questions developed by "outside experts". The implication of such an assessment seems to suggest that faculty members are incapable of doing their jobs. Faculty members are not involved in the construction of standardized assessments therefore are blinded to the type of questions asked. An advantage of standardized assessment would be that feedback from the data will provide teachers with questions that were missed. The data would aide teachers in adjusting their teaching techniques for the next school year in areas where student had a large percentage of misses. Many school systems now seem to "teach to the test" and provide practice assessments such as monthly's, quarterly's, or benchmarks based on six or nine weeks.
