In the Air Force in a leadership role there are many times where making ethical decisions can be a matter of security violation. An instance was when I was working at the post office. We deal with registered mail a lot of our Office of Special Investigation (OSI) will send out evidence through our registered mail service as it is the most classified way of mailing. They will also receive mail the same way. In order for OSI to pick up registered mail they must be on an appointment letter signed by their commander, have had formal training from our official mail and have a mail card. However, one day our registered mail clerk was trying to give mail to an OSI agent without verifying he was authorized to pick up mail. He figured well he's OSI he can pick it up. I had to step in and make that ethical decision and verify if he was on the letter, he was not. So I informed him we could not give him the mail and he would have to come back with either a new letter or someone who is on the letter. This was not only to cover us but him in case something was to happen. He wasn't very thrilled but he understood. If the mail was delivered it would have been a security violation for the post office which could lead to issues with our leadership.
