In my future advanced practice nursing role, I would like to utilize Electronic Health Records (EHR) as a big data source. According to DiAngi et al. (2019), the EHR is a tool intended to improve healthcare providers' ability to care for patients, which may have led to advances in medical practice, such as a reduction in resource utilization, improvement in patient safety, and increased efficiency in patient care in some clinics.
Clinical data obtained from the EHR includes information from the hospital information system, imaging centers, labs, pharmacies, and other health service organizations, as well as patient-generated health data and physicians' notes (Batco & Slezak, 2022).
The data from Electronic Health Records (EHR) can be used to improve patient care by assisting in decision-making for diagnosing patients and determining appropriate treatments such as medications, tests, and procedures. Additionally, EHR data can be valuable in disease prevention, including primary prevention through immunizations for diseases like flu, pneumonia, and shingles, as well as secondary prevention, which focuses on early disease detection in seemly healthy patients with subtle forms of the disease that can be diagnosed during routine doctor visits after conducting tests (Kisling & Das, 2023).
According to Kanaan and Carr (2009), health data stewardship involves the responsible and ethical use of data obtained from a client's personal information. This includes ensuring that anyone who collects, views, stores, exchanges, analyzes, or uses electronic health data practices good stewardship. Therefore, advanced practice nurses are crucial in ensuring patient health data collection, management, and ethical use. They should use this data evidence-based to provide beneficial and safe care, leading to better patient outcomes.
