Four arguments
Democratic backsliding is a recent phenomenon, but has lasted for some years.
For the last quarter of the 20th century, a major transition toward democracy occurred (known as the Third Wave). Thus, the opposite trend is now occurring.
The reaction against globalization is also a recent phenomenon, but has lasted for some years.
Candidates and political parties expressing opposition to policies associated with globalization or to the entire phenomenon, have performed much better in election since 2015 than before that year
The international political system has recently become bi-polar, if not multi-polar. 1991-recently = uni-polar
The U.S. remains a great power, but China has recently become a great power too. Other possibilities? Russia, Japan, and the European Union.
The so called liberal world order may no longer exist?
It refers to a rules based global political system
Promoting democracy and human rights is not stressed as much.
Global rules and arrangements are no longer properly functioning.

Democracy: A kind of government in which people acquire the ability to make society's decisions through a free and competitive struggle for masses votes.
Must include other characteristics too.
They must include the right to vote, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly.
Another necessary characteristics is an independent judiciary.
It is historically in the West
Many countries have experienced democratic backsliding.
Why is this trend so important?

Democracy is associated with liberty.
Democracies are more internally peaceful.
Democracies are more externally peaceful.
Democracy is important for U.S. national security.
As several years have passed since the internet emerged, dictatorships have used it to try erode democracy.
They construct false news stories to use bots to disseminate them. EX: Fake News
Capitalism: An economic system in which private individual own enterprises and are permitted to accumulate wealth and property.
It is historically associated with the West.
It has been significantly in the past 35 years because the system has spread to other countries.
The contemporary period has experienced a major transition.
Nationalism: A psychological bond between people who share a common language, culture, and history.
Its root word is nation.
Examples of nations include the Poles, Hungarians, and Kurds.
Nation is not synonymous with country
It is significantly insofar as most conflicts are nationalities conflicts.
It is significant in the contemporary period insofar it is a challenge to globalization.
Several links between countries have emerged during approximately the past five decades.
People in an increasingly number of countries are perceiving such ties as mostly negative.
A growing number of people appear to desire reducing these links with other countries.
One example of this is raising tariffs and reducing the number of immigrants.
Globalization: The integration of economics, information, ideas, and technology into a world system.
Many scholars in the social sciences argue that the period of international relations since 1973 has been characterized by globalization.
Decisions made and event that happen in one part can effect another.
It is significant insofar as a recent backlash against globalization has occurred.
The latter has been particularly true in the west
Policies, election, and public opinion suggests growing opposition toward trade and immigration - two defining elements of globalization.
In regard to trade, many countries have adopted many more policies to encourage domestic production formal industrial strategies.
The group of 7 countries have collectively increased their subsides during this time from an average of .6% in 2016 to 2% in 2020.
