Overview

Corrections departments are faced with many challenges such as safety, transportation, contraband, access control, and others. Fortunately, technology has been able to help mitigate many of these challenges. In this activity, you are briefed on authentic events that frequently disrupted corrections operations and then asked to flex your Agility and Public Safety and Security skills to describe tools that will address four problem areas faced by corrections operations.

View the Corrections Challenges Briefing video that introduces you to the types of challenges to corrections operations and challenges you to find solutions.

Download the Homework Template and use it to complete this homework.

Review Electronic Monitoring of Offenders: An Ethical Review as needed to complete this homework.

Research the technology to solve the problem types detailed in the brief that are often encountered in corrections operations in the areas listed below.

1) Probationer monitoring and accountability.
2) Contraband detection and prevention in prisons.
3) Access control.
4) Officer/Staff safety.

Task

Create a technology briefing for each of the four problem types, using the Week 10 Homework Template. Make sure to consider and incorporate information from your readings, research, and the Corrections Challenges Briefing video into your work. Do the following for each of your chosen technologies:

1) Correctly classify the tool and describe how its primary feature(s) and capabilities improve the performance, efficiency, effectiveness, and safety of probation/corrections operations.

2) Describe 3 accepted policies, rules, or best practices for the use of the technology.

3) Provide an explanation of a significant (non-ethics-related) downside or concern regarding the technology that would effectively inform a decision to adopt it.

4) Describe a primary ethical concern associated with your monitoring devices or system. Write at least 3 responses, or talking points, that would effectively address the concern.
