This semester we read three different approaches to considering revolutionary forces in the United States. Tocqueville studied the tendencies developing democratic revolutions across the world, highlighting the ways certain types of social character active in American society, like lawyers and legalism, acted as a moderating force on democratic impulses. Du Bois elevated the study of character to consider the ideological basis behind irrational social alliances and divisions, as well as, offering a radical reinterpretation of radical political subjectivity from away from those with the most reliable political character to those w/ the most material need for developing political change. His conclusion was that a real democratic revolution was initiated for a moment, but that revolution was overcome by counterrevolutionary forces, but that struggle remains the struggle of both labor and democracy the world over. Boggs provides a materialist framework for recognizing, in any period, who the revolutionary social elements are; in his moment he first embraced the black power movement as the only social force capable of developing the necessary american revolution to humanize the country, and then, later, considered why that movement failed.
