Christina When it comes to immigrant or refugee population cultural they already have it hard because they different barriers that are preventing them from getting the type of assistance that they need. One of the biggest barriers that they have is language. "Immigrants and refugees also face language barriers and cultural barriers to accessing health care" (Burkholder and Nash, 2013).
When it come a person that is unable to speak English fluently it because harder to communicate with the medical staff if no one that is working at the facility are able to speak or communicate with the patient. "The U.S. health care system in market-oriented, meaning it relies on competition between care providers to strive for quality and control cost" (Burkholder and Nash, 2013). This means that the U.S. healthcare system is designed to have a competitive healthcare market. One of the disadvantages of having a market-oriented health care system is that people might being paying more for health care because the need is greater and they do not have enough time to find the right health insurance premium for them and their families.
With a market like this it can be hard for someone that is immigrant or refugee because of the language barrier they are unable to read or find a premiums because they do not know how to communicate to the company or read what the companies are offering. They might even be unaware of insurance all together because they have no one to communicate with or teaching them about this things. Programs in Hampton Virginia that server the local immigrants and refugees are Hampton Roads Refugee and Immigration services, department of social services, and local churches are what I could find online.
Most of the facilities that offered help have closed down or isn't much information about them. One thing that we could do to help improve these programs is try to get more programs and funding from the state to help those individuals get the support that they need. We need to educate the community on how they can get involved and help the refugee and immigrates get established in the United States.
