Assignment: Sociology
Purpose
Watch one of two documentaries and analyze the events in the film as current events that are represented in forms of media. Using concepts of power and privilege, discuss who holds both in the settings of the film. Discuss how film can be used as an important mode to reach the public and educate a public audience about sociology.
Instructions
Follow the instructions below for your Film Analysis. Upload your assignment here (instead of a discussion post).
Pick one of the two films. Both are similar in topic, but one focuses on Columbus, OH while the other is based in Chicago.
Provide a short summary of the main theme of the film. Acknowledge at least two scientific facts/evidence being presented in the film. If none exist, acknowledge this as well. *Most documentaries will identify some research/science/facts.
Use the reading from Chapter 2 (located in the module) to identify concepts you can apply to the film.
A. Using the film and Chapter 2, answer the following questions:
B. Who holds the "power" and the "privilege" in the film? (think big here, most of the time power and privilege is held by others who might not be directly mentioned in the film). There can be multiple levels of power and privilege, not just one.
C. If you find yourself at a dinner party explaining the social problem in the film to people who don't understand, how might you use sociological mindfulness to "call-in" instead of "calling out" and explain the film's sociological impacts (*this is not easy, but doable!)
