The Design Project is intended to provide a realistic design project scenario. Students will form design teams to produce a design deliverable in a similar manner to what is required in a design consultancy.

Students will be required to complete the structural analysis and design of nominated reinforced concrete columns, wall and footing elements of a multi-storey building. The Design Project will require group work components and deliverables as well as individual work components and deliverables.

Each group shall provide a report including design concept, design parameters, all loadings, and structural analysis for the selected elements. Also, specify the selected elements to be designed by each group member.

Each student shall individually design and detail five reinforced concrete columns in project 1 and one reinforced concrete wall and one footing relevant to one of the selected five columns in project 2. Reports shall document all necessary analysis and design, complete with sketches and written explanations. The report shall be concise and effective in transmitting technical information to interested parties, such as engineering checkers and drafting staff.

A reinforced concrete six storey building is required to be designed to accommodate car parking in the ground floor, offices in the 1st - 4th floors, and assign the fifth floor for services. A full set of architectural drawings is approved by the owner and made available for the  structural design team.

Note that the building is to be constructed in Australia, so must adhere to Australian Design Standards and shall be constructed from standard Australian materials. A full set of architectural drawings is approved by the owner and made available for the structural design team. However, a set of structural design drawings is provided for guidance.
