- You are required to carry out 5 individual observations on 5 individual children.
- The observations must be carried out on 5 different age ranges.
- You must use at least 3 different observation methods
- There must be at least one narrative.

Learners are required to develop their own outline plan; this is one example of a plan.
Section 2: Each of the 5 observations should presented like so:
1. A Parental Consent Form from each parent of child being observed.
2. A Child Observation Cover Sheet for each observation giving background information, detailed aims, rationale and a description of the observation method used in each observation, highlighting why you chose this method for this area of development and the positive and negatives of this method.
Please note: cover sheet must be typed - handwritten will not be accepted.
3. The actual observation.
4. An analysis and evaluation of the observation with at least one reference to a relevant theorist per observation. Your reference(s) must be used to show how the theoretical views of development link to the observation undertaken.
5. A minimum of two recommendations per observation, for helping the child in the specific area of development. Your recommendations need to be based on the child's development, and relevant to the early childhood curriculum.
Section 3:
- Discuss personal learning gained during the observational process.
- Evaluate the role of the adult in the observation process.
Please note: All tasks are to be completed as outlined in the brief. All sections of work should be submitted for correction together. Submission of individual sections will not be corrected.
Assignment 2: Integrated Child Study
Guidelines for Integrated Child Study:
- You are required to carry out 5 individual observations on 1 child aged between 6weeks - 6years old.
- You must use at least 3 different observation methods.
- There must be at least one narrative.
- You must carry out the observations on the 5 different areas of development. Physical Development, Intellectual Development, Emotional Development, Language Development and Social Development.
- A Parental Consent Form must be attached to your child study.
Presentation of Project: Word Count 3000-3500 words minimum. (Your word count does not include your actual observations).
The Child Study must include the following:
Section 1: Introduction (300 words): Provide an introduction to the child study to include detailed aims & rationale for conducting the Integrated Child Study.
Section 2: Background Information (600 words): Outline collaboration and best practice with the various parties (parents, children, colleagues), to conduct the study. (Refer to best practice and theory on why collaboration is important in the ECCE setting)
Detail background information on the setting in which the study was carried out.
Give background information on the child selected.
Give an outline of your plan for conducting the observations. i.e. area of development, methodologies & the time frame involved - see sample plan below.

Learners are required to develop their own outline plan; this is one example of a plan.
Section 3: Methodology (600 words): Give an overview of each observational method selected in your plan, highlighting why you chose this method for each area of development and the positive and negatives of each method. A minimum of three.
Section 4: Each of the 5 observations should presented like so:
- A Child Observation Cover Sheet - see below
Please note: cover sheet must be typed - handwritten will not be accepted.
- The actual observation
- An analysis and evaluation of the observation with at least one reference to a relevant theorist per observation. Your reference(s) must be used to show how the theoretical views of development link to the observation undertaken.
- A minimum of two recommendations per observation, for helping the child in the specific area of development. Your recommendations need to be based on the child's development, and relevant to the early childhood curriculum.
Section 5: Evaluation (500 words): Once all 5 observations are completed, you are then required to complete on over all detailed evaluation of all 5 observations. Ensuring an integrated description of the child and their developmental needs and interests with detailed referencing.
Section 6: Conclusion & reflection (500 words): Discuss personal learning gained during the observational process and why it is important to conduct observations in the early year's environment.
Outline the importance of objectivity, senstivity, & external forces when conducting observational studies.
