Socialization Exercise

• Please respond to the following questions. Each response is one to two sentences.
• Do not use any outside sources for this assignment. The definitions of socialization and of primary and secondary socialization were discussed in class are available in in Chapter 3 of the textbook. 
• Uses personal examples and observations. Do not use the examples from the textbook or class or ones you find online.

Definitions/Information to help with the assignment: 

Primary socialization: the process of acquiring the basic skills required to operate in society during childhood

Secondary socialization: socialization outside the family after childhood

Examples of how socialization occurs are, direct - being told something is correct way to behave or indirect - observing others behaving that way.

Question 1:

1. Provide a personal example/observation of primary socialization.
2. Who/what was the agent of socialization.
3. How was socialization done (give two examples).

Question 2: 

1. Provide a personal example/observation of secondary socialization.
2. Who/what was the agent of socialization.
3. How was socialization done (give two examples).

Please note: Come up with one example each for primary and secondary socialization and then explain that example in the next two sections of the question. 

Here is an example of a response for Question 1:

1. An example of primary socialization is learning to respect your elders
2. The agent of socialization in this case is the parents 
3. The socialization was done directly by being told by my parents that it was important to respect elders and how to do that. The socialization was also done indirectly as I observed my parents being respectful to elders in various ways like serving them first at meals, giving them the best spots at the dinner table and using certain terms to name them (Mr, Ms, Auntie, Uncle)
