Symbolism is likely the most recognizable literary device in literature. In films, it might be the object on which the camera lingers before the scene changes. Similarly, in a novel, it would be a recurring object but could also be a character, a situation, an event, or an action. In a short story, one outstanding symbol usually conveys a deeper meaning to the character and the story. Authors generally choose their symbols carefully to provide a rich theme to the piece of literature.

In conjunction with the deeper meaning of literature, we will also look at the "grown-up comic books," known as Graphic Fiction. Many films we enjoy, such as The Watchman, Wanted, Snowpiercer, and the wildly popular Walking Dead television series, began as animated or graphic novels. This genre is powerful, succinct, and fraught with symbolism. Who knew those comic books we loved as children would become today's bestselling films and novels?
