Case Study 1

Eva is 21 years old and has a mild intellectual disability. She arrived from Croatia with her parents and older brother 10 years ago. She attends a Day Program 2 days a week and works in a coffee shop 2 days a week. She is very social and gets along with everyone and would like to live on her own one day. Recently her parents mentioned that there is another girl at the Day Program who is bullying her. The client is 19 years old and has Down Syndrome. She has called her names, stolen from her and even physically assaulted her. Eva's parents are becoming concerned about this, but are too afraid to say anything because they are worried about what will happen to Eva and her service.

Her husband has passed away and she has been living alone in her own home in metropolitan Sydney since that time. However, she recently had a stroke which has left her with some weakness in her left side. This has also affected her speech and her memory. She is very determined to remain in her home and her son fully supports this decision. They are very committed to any plan that will see her return to a state of wellness again and functioning with support in her own home.
