Topic: Chapter 6 ENUMA ELISH( Mesopotamia).

  • Provide a brief summary of the Enuma Elish and discuss it as a work of ancient literature - narrative structure and poetic style? important characters? major insights and/or lessons?
  • Describe any difficulties you had in reading it, as well as what you found interesting or enjoyable in your reading of this (the most) ancient creation myth?

Question 2:

  • What similarities and/or differences do you see between Genesis and Enuma Elish? Compare the world view in Enuma Elish with that of the creation story by the Priestly writer in Genesis (Ch. 5). Consider the following: the role of water, the relationship between humans and the gods, the place of quarreling, among other elements/themes. Reference at least one of the videos and/or links included in this week's lecture.

Question 3:

  • Consider intergenerational conflict (often called "the generation gap") in the Enuma Elish and in Greek myth (Chs. 3 and 4). Do the conflicts work the same way?
  • Are they reflective of aspects of the society?
  • Is there such conflict in our society today?
  • Do we have more contemporary stories that reflect such conflict (e.g. "Game of Thrones" or "Star Wars" or...)?
