Questions: Select a current social welfare service program (TANF, EITC, FS, Medicare and Medicaid, WIC, etc.), and write an overview of that program. The overview should address eligibility, benefits, and funding of the program, and you must discuss Latino/usage rates of the program you select. Finally, you must about the causes for Latino usage of the program you select, poverty alone is not a sufficient answer. For example, food stamps or SNAP - why are Latinos on this program, and what does it have to do with, low wages - then give data to support this.

Your paper should include the following:

  • Be clear about which option you have chosen (and why)
  • Provide a brief history of the program and demonstrate an awareness of the rules that apply to program eligibility
  • Provide information about the size and scope of the program in Oregon (the state you're in if not Oregon) and nationally, and what it takes to apply for and receive food stamps in Oregon (your state if you're not in Oregon).
  • Provide an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the program (conceptually and based on your experience) and recommendations to improve the program based on your analysis and research findings where appropriate (note: the recommendation section should follow the description of your experience)
  • If you'd like, you can clearly and accurately document your purchases during a one-week period, would your expenses suffer if you were enrolled in the program? Would you be able to purchase your regular food items, and do the things you enjoy?
  • Summarize your experience (Was it valuable? What did you learn?)
  • Though this is an experiential paper, you should utilize research findings to bolster your arguments whenever possible
