The protection of personal information has been a challenging topic to address. While you can do everything in your sphere of control to protect your personal information, those efforts must be reciprocated everywhere. Unfortunately, week after week and month after month, there are notifications of data breaches from large companies and organizations. Sadly, the United States does not have a nationwide data breach notification requirement, and the option is left to individual states to implement. If a company is headquartered in New York but you live in New Hampshire, then the notification requirements become a bit cloudier, which is problematic since the goal is to be aware in order to take protection measures.

In your initial post, address the following questions:

1. What is one change or addition you would recommend to the federal government surrounding the data breach notification requirements when personally identifiable information (PII) is involved in a breach?

2. What is the data breach notification requirement in the state you live in? Does it provide for timely notification of a breach involving PII?

3. In your response posts, discuss why some believe that a nationwide law should not be established for data breach notifications. How do the laws in your locality differ from those where your peer lives? Are the data breach notifications the same?
