Question

What is the balance? Although for many years, the focus in this country was on Civil Liberties, particularly in the last century, Civil Rights have risen to the forefront of society. As we have seen in some of our earlier discussions, such issues not only arise between state and federal levels of government, but also within the states themselves. Are we striking the right balance in dealing with these priorities? What have we done well? What can we do better? For example, earlier posts have mentioned the difference between women's rights in Alabama and those in Colorado. How should those differences be addressed, and does the federal or state government have that responsibility? How much freedom are Americans willing to sacrifice in the interest of equality? And vice versa? The federal government has often had to step in and protect civil rights in the absence of state concerns, such as in the case of Jim Crow Laws. Can a balance be achieved in a republic based on democratic principles?
