Case: In this case study your task is to use the techniques and evaluate the case presented. The purpose of the exercise is to expose you to a real "case gone wrong" and give you an idea of the scrutiny from the media and the public.

The case study involves a high-profile unsolved crime. Unfortunately, some major mistakes were made in the investigation that will likely cause it to remain permanently unsolved. I have provided some links that will give you information on the case. Your assignment is to review the information provided and conduct some online research to answer the questions below. There is a lot of information on the internet; some of it is good, and some are not accurate. I will start you with a timeline of the case provided by CNN. The timeline also has some live links:

The initial police investigation had a compromised crime scene. Based on the information presented in this course, what was done wrong, and how did it affect this investigation?

Here is a copy of the autopsy report. Boulder ME Autopsy. If that link does not work for you, try this online Autopsy from Denver Post (Links to an external site.). Review the autopsy, and please provide the cause and manner of death.

Also, based on the autopsy report (and whatever other reliable information you can find). What evidence is there that JonBenet was sexually assaulted? What information would you present to the prosecuting attorney on this aspect of the case?

After the case, touch DNA analysis was found on JonBenet Ramsey's clothing News story on DNA. The results led the prosecuting attorney to announce he had cleared JonBenet's parents. Was this premature? Why or why not?

There was a ransom note left at the scene. The note has been the subject of speculation and analysis regarding its authenticity. The official analyses have not been released, but many "experts" online have speculated. The suppositions and opinions are based on both handwriting and statement analysis (Links to an external site.) and statement analysis. Review the information and, based on Daubert, do you believe either analysis is reliable enough to be admitted into court?
