As we have studied this term, managing a police agency is a monumental task. Each agency has its policies and procedures. Each state has a unique set of laws on training and legal issues for police officers. Each agency is responsible for funding, training, and equipping its officers. Some argue standardization across the country would be advantageous. Creating a national police force would assure all officers were trained for the same laws, rules, and regulations. All aspects of the job would be standardized, and the costs for providing police would shift from the local to the national budget.

This paper encompasses many of the issues discussed in this course. It is your opportunity to synthesize all that you have learned combined with independent research. For your final project, discuss:

  • the sociological implications of transitioning the bureaucratic administration of police agencies from the local to national oversight.
  • the pros and cons of having a national police force. Would officers have better training and equipment?
  • the challenges of nationalizing the police.
  • the impact on crime, terrorism, and other issues discussed in this course.
