Cellular and Molecular Basis of Cancer

Aim: To provide you with an understanding of the major cellular and molecular changes that occur during cancer development

Learning Outcome 1: Explain in depth the cellular basis of cancer and relate cellular origin to nomenclature of the major tumour types

Learning Outcome 2: Critically discuss the proposed mechanisms of tumour development, including the stem cell theory and stochastic models of tumour development, and hereditary mechanisms of tumour development.

Learning Outcome 3: Hypothesise how disrupting key cell signalling mediators affects cellular behaviour and tumour development

Learning Outcome 4: Discuss the relative merits of diagnostic and screening tools for the detection of cancers

Coursework Customisation

Using a tumour of your choice*, review the molecular mechanisms resulting in tumour initiation and disease progression. In answering this question, highlight (where relevant) how molecular changes in cancer cells may be used to aid diagnosis, predict prognosis, and determine possible therapeutic interventions

*Possible tumour types:
Hereditary Colon Cancer (either Lynch syndrome, or FAP)
Cutaneous melanoma
Uveal Melanoma
Multiple Myeloma
Osteosarcoma
Lung (Any single sub-type, e.g. ALK+ve, EGFR+ve NSCLC )
Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia
