Assignment - Research Dissertation
Dissertation - PERVIOUS CONCRETE FOR DRAINING RAINWATER FROM PAVEMENTS
Prepare an Interim Literature Form (15 articles) according to the prescribed format Interim literature review form.docx. For guidance to find academic papers.
For judging journal quality, refer to this help guide
outlines the research field,
explains the key similarities and differences among the reviewed 15 articles,
categorises the 15 articles into
different groups based on their
similarities and differences
proposes your preliminary research topic in your theme
Students need to include the literature review report and form into a single Word file, which needs to be submitted on 30 Aug 2024 (week 6).
No formatting requirements. You can create your own Table of Contents and design the sections and sub-sections of your report.
Requirement 1: Outline the research field
You need to provide an explanation of what your chosen research theme means (e.g. what 5D BIM means?) and what the common research areas are in this theme (e.g. automated quantity take-off, interoperability of BIM applications, etc), justified by the 15 articles reviewed by you.
Requirement 2: Explain the key similarities and differences among the reviewed
This requirement means you need to identify the similarities and differences between the 15 articles themselves, not the similarities and differences between the 15 articles and your research topic.
You can identify the similarities and differences based on factors that you believe are important in this research theme. For instance, for the theme of 6D BIM, the important factors could be the year of publication, country of the first author, research topic (e.g. energy or waste or water or emission or ?), research methodology used by the paper (e.g. questionnaire or interview or computer simulation or real-world experiment or what?), used software (e.g. ArchiCAD or Revit or Rhino Grasshopper or Green Building Studio or DesignBuilder or what?), data collected by the paper, etc. As themes are different, you need to read the 15 articles and judge by yourself, what are important factors in this research theme. Then, you identify the similarities and differences based on these factors. For instance, regarding similarities, you may find something like 10 of the 15 articles all used Revit. Regarding differences, you may find something like the first authors of the 15 articles all come from different countries, suggesting the importance of this theme is globally recognised. different countries, suggesting the importance of this theme is globally recognised.
Requirement 3: Categorise the 15 articles into different groups based on their similarities and differences
In requirement 2, you have identified the similarities and differences between articles. In requirement 3, you need to classify the articles into different groups. You will have different classification results based on different criteria used. For instance, you can classify the articles based on their methodology (e.g. 5 articles used questionnaire, 3 articles used statistical data analysis, 4 articles used 3D modelling software, and 3 articles used experiment/observation), or research topic, or country of origion, or used software, etc. You can provide only one classification result or several classification results based on different criteria. The more nuanced your classification is, the higher mark you obtain for this section.
Requirement 4: Propose your preliminary research topic in your theme
Now, you need to propose your research topic based on adequate justification. Try to provide as many details and justifications as possible. For instance, Why is the topic important in general and also for you to study? Has anyone already investigated the topic and has some results, and if so, why do you still want to investigate the topic? What research methodology do you plan to use? How will you collect the data needed? The more detailed and compelling the justification is, the higher mark you obtained for this section.
