This assignment is designed to test the following learning outcomes, which are derived from the module descriptor:
Llearning outcome 1: Demonstrate a working knowledge of the construction of low and high-rise buildings, both commercial and residential within the context of the current sustainable agenda.
Llearning outcome 2: Demonstrate a systematic knowledge of the current statutory regulations governing existing, new and green buildings, green design and materials and the work of statutory and advisory bodies.
Llearning outcome 3: Critically analyse topical concerns in the field of sustainable construction and be able to apply independent thought.
ASSIGNMENT TASK AND SPECIFIC TERMS
Your client has asked you to carry out an evaluation of and to report on an existing commercial building. Using any of the following iconic buildings (20 Fenchurch Street Heron Tower and City Hall Building) as a case study, describe the existing construction features and the service installations presented below:
• Building envelope (foundation, structural frame and cladding / loadbearing wall, roof and roof covering, fenestrations)
• Floors and Ceilings
• HVAC
• Fire systems
For each of the above features and service installations, critically analyse with the aid of images/ drawings/ photographs the construction details in relation to functional requirements and sustainability. Analysis should cover:
• Materials used
• Design
• Building orientation
• Construction methods
Your client has further instructed you to propose innovative solutions for upgrading the building in compliance with current building regulations, sustainable construction materials and methods in order to improve the overall building's performance.
Requirements
• You are NOT required to visit the case study building site physically. You should consult published literature on the building and appropriately reference any sources used.
• Your report must be in your own words. Copying and direct quotations from sources will not be accepted.
• All visual representations must be captioned appropriately with the sources cited and appropriately referenced.
• Visual representations must be explained within the text and must be placed as close as possible to the text to which they are associated.
