The human population places many demands on the environment regarding sustenance, energy, and resources necessary for us to flourish. Although the environment in which we live is resilient to the demand we place on the resources it contains, we must be aware of factors that impact the sustainable nature of the environmental systems we interact with regularly. Think about the context for your analysis that explains what the selected case study is about and why it is relevant for discussing ethics and leadership in the geosciences. What implications does it have beyond this particular case? Also, assess the environmental risks and trade-offs for the project in the case study. Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
II. Balancing Human Needs and Environmental Factors. Use this section to assess the environmental risks and trade-offs for the project in the case study:
A. Analyze the environmental issues raised by Earth system characteristics and processes at the location in the case study. In other words, how might choosing this location for the project effect be affected by the environment? Use the geoscience information and data from the case study to support your answer.
B. Determine what your analysis of the environmental issues above suggests regarding project development. Justify your answer using geoscience principles and data. For example, how might project managers mitigate the ecological risks for this location?
C. Analyze how proposed human activities in the case study are likely to impact the environment. Support your response using geoscience information and data from the case study. For example, are there risks that the proposed activities will contaminate water, cause soil to erode, overuse scarce resources, or increase chances for geohazards such as mudslides or flooding?
D. Apply the concept of human-environmental coupled systems to the selected case study and explain how it impacts project leaders' decisions. Justify your response. In other words, how do human and environmental factors interact with each other over time?
E. Analyze the trade-offs faced by the project manager(s) based on the interactions between human and environmental factors you identified. Bear in mind the immediate human needs driving the project and the environmental risks involved.
F. Propose an ethical resolution to the trade-offs that balance human needs with environmental concerns. Justify your response and explain how the geoscience information in the case informed your proposal.
