Overview

Purpose: The purpose of this assessment is to evaluate students' understanding of the concepts of multiple access techniques, cellular networks, WiFi, and sensor networks. The assessment will also assess students' ability to apply their knowledge to real-world problems. Students will learn to investigate real-world problems, discover their existing solutions, and identify their limitations/inadequacies.

Part 1: Multiple Access Techniques

1. Describe a real-world scenario where TDMA would be more effective than CDMA. Justify your choice.

2. Create a simple simulation or flow chart to demonstrate how CDMA works. Explain your model.

3. Explain how OFDMA is used in 5G technologies. What advantages does it offer over older multiple access technologies?

Part 2: Cellular Networks

4. Design a small-scale 5G network for a smart city. List the hardware and protocols involved. Explain the advantages of using 5G in this scenario.

5. Discuss the coverage of 5G technology by the leading telcos (e.g., Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone) in Australia and plan for future coverage.

6. How Australian businesses and services can employ 5G technology to increase efficiency and productivity?

Part 3 - Scanning Wireless Access Marks

7. Investigate wireless networks available in a shopping centre. Use the insider package installed on your laptop and walk through a shopping centre. Record the wireless networks available in at least three spots (you may consider going close to a retails or restaurant that provides free WiFi, such as McDonnalds). Capture the inSSIDer screenshots. Give the list of available networks/access Marks including their technical characteristics like channel number, signal (SNR, signal to noise ratio in dB), security, etc. Include your screenshots from the software. Make some observations based on the data you collected, like, how do you relate SNR with the distance (from your own location to access Marks), overcrowded channels (i.e., multiple networks are transmitting using the same set of channels), etc.

8. Use inSSIDer at you home (or place of residence where you have other WiFi networks) and observe the signal strength and channel number of your own network and other networks. Can you suggest any way to change your access point's (i.e., home router's) transmission setting to get better reception within your home?

Part 4: Sensor Networks

9. Propose an emerging application of wireless sensor network such as to monitoring environmental conditions (air quality, temperature, etc.) in an urban area. What type of sensors would you use and why?
