In the production of soybean oil, dried and flaked soybeans are brought into contact with a solvent (often hexane) that extracts the oil and leaves behind the residual solids and a small amount of oil.
a. The soybeans contain 18.5 wt% oil and the remainder insoluble solids, and the hexane is fed at a rate corresponding to 2.0 kg hexane per kg beans. The residual solids leaving the extraction unit contain 35.0 wt% hexane, all of the non-oil solids that entered with the beans, and 1.0% of the oil that entered with the beans. For a feed rate of 1000 kg/h of dried flaked soybeans, calculate the mass flow rates of the extract and residual solids, and the composition of the extract.
b. The product soybean oil must now be separated from the extract. Sketch a flowchart with two units, the extraction unit from Parts a and b and the unit separating soybean oil from hexane. Propose a use for the recovered hexane.
The hydrogen produced was successfully vented and no chemical explosion occurred. If 1.00 103 kg of Zr reacts, what mass of H2 is produced? What volume of H2 at 1.0 atm and 1000.°C is produced?
For a satellite cruising in a circular orbit at an altitude of 500 km, determine the period of revolution, the flight speed, and the energy expended to bring a unit mass into this orbit.
What is the concentration of the original hydrochloric acid solution? Also, what volume of 0.0200 M calcium hydroxide is required to neutralize 35.00 mL of 0.0500 M nitric acid? Explain your answer in detail.
Develop project plans for the design and construction of the following processes. Use Figure 1.2 as a guide to the activities that must occur. Estimate the overall time required from launching the project to the start of operation.
Explain the operation of the counter and sketch the timing diagram.
Derive Eq. (49) for the optimum economic pipe diameter and compare this to the equivalent expression presented as Eq. (5-90) in J. H. Perry and C. H. Chilton, ed., "Chemical Engineers' Handbook," 5th ed., p. 5-32, McGraw-Hill Book Company, New Yor..
What is the pressure of the oxygen gas if the vapor pressure for water at 25°C is 23.8 mm Hg?
Take the saturation temperature of n-propanol at 2.1 bar as 118ŽC. The otherphysical properties required can be found in the literature, or estimated.
Zirconium is one of the few metals that retains its structural integrity upon exposure to radiation. The fuel rods in most nuclear reactors therefore are often made of zirconium.
Under these conditions, what is the depreciation cost during the sixth year of the total life if straight-line depreciation is used?
The pressure is adjusted so that 75% of the mixture is vapor while the temperature remains at 55 °C. Determine the pressure and the compositions of the two phases.
Problem: A 500mm conductor inside an electric motor has a force of 1.5 newtons exerted on it. If it is at right angles to a magnetic field of flux density 0.6 T, calculate the current flowing in the conductor.
