Question: Propose a training need memo for the following case incident
No One Is an Island (NOII) is an online dating service based in Victoria, with customers all over Vancouver Island. To compete with bigger dating services, NOII is constantly refining its algorithm and updating its user interface, and so it maintains a small but critical team of software developers. The software development team - the "Dev team" - has 4 members: a senior software developer, two intermediate software developers, and one junior software developer. NOII is a growing business, so the Dev team is always very busy. NOII hires software development coop students every year. It's a great opportunity to get some inexpensive help, plus it provides a pipeline of new employees when the students graduate.
In fact, two of the current Dev team members were originally hired as coop students. Before the last coop term, two of the Dev team members - Pat Ondaback and Carey Notonhead - volunteered to act as mentors to the new students, as they both hope to become managers and are looking for supervisory experience. HR worked closely with Pat and Carey throughout the recruitment and selection process. Pat and Carey provided valuable feedback on the job posting and the interview questions. They also helped short-list candidates and were on the interview panel. Once all the interviews were complete and the top two candidates had been identified, Pat and Carey chose who each wanted to supervise: Pat is mentoring Quinn, and Carey is mentoring Drue. Scenario You are the HR Generalist for NOII. As the only HR professional on staff, you are responsible for all aspects of HR - recruitment and selection, orientation and training, employee relations, occupational health and safety, and so on.
Before the coop term started, you created a three-week orientation plan for the coop students that includes specific tasks and regular check-ins with their mentors. The plan also includes key meetings with other folks at NOII, such as a meeting with the CEO to learn about NOII's philosophy and business goals. This morning, one month into the coop term, you checked in with the mentors and coop students. You met individually with each person. You learned that Pat and Quinn are doing great. Pat is very pleased with Quinn's progress, and Quinn feels supported and excited about the work they are doing. However, you also learned that Carey is not happy with how Drue is doing. Carey expressed irritation and asserted that Drue doesn't seem to understand the tasks assigned. And Drue seems bewildered and worried. What will you do?
