Linguistics Phonology Homework -
These data come from Polish (Slavic, Poland; over 40 million speakers). I have simplified some non-essential aspects of these words. Examine the following forms, paying special attention to voicing alternations and to alternations between [u] and [o].
Propose a phonological analysis of the voicing and [u]∼[o] alternations in Polish. Ignore any other alternations you might observe.
Your write-up should include the following:
Formal phonological rules, written using distinctive features, which account for the observed alternations. Remember to write these rules using the minimum number of phonological features needed.
A statement of rule ordering, if necessary.
Sample derivations that illustrate how your analysis works (showing instances of rule application, non-application, and if applicable, rule interaction).
Prose discussion of your analysis, written in essay form.
- What underlying representations are you assuming? What evidence supports the URs that you assume?
- What do your rules accomplish, and how do they work?
- Why are your rule formulations better than conceivable alternatives?
- Why should (or shouldn't) your rules be ordered? If they are ordered, what order must they apply in, and why? Why does the opposite rule ordering fail? (You can demonstrate this by means of a sample derivation.)
Since natural classes are language-specific, you may find it helpful to write a vowel and consonant chart for Polish. This is not required, but could be useful.
Your write-up should not exceed five pages (shorter is better, as long as you address the points raised above).
